Literacy CAFE' Strategies
Below are the CAFE' Strategies (and a brief description if necessary) that students have learned thus far. New strategies will be added weekly so revisit often! Be sure to add these reading strategies to the ones you're currently using to help support your child's reading at home!
Be sure to check the Parent Pipeline Newsletters that are being added to the Newsletter page each week. These newsletters are an excellent resource for you to use to support your child in using the Cafe Strategies at home!
Comprehension Strategies:
Check for Understanding (should be able to answer "who" and "what" after every paragraph, page, and/or chapter)
Go Back & Reread (if it doesn't make sense or you don't understand)
Monitor & Fix-Up (a multitude of smaller strategies such as summarize, go back, SLOW down, and read ahead)
Use Text Features (nonfiction text features such as bold print, underlined words, captions, maps, illustrations, etc. help comprehension of nonfiction text)
Use Prior Knowledge (text-to-text connections, text-to-self connections)
Accuracy Strategies:
Cross-Checking (asking oneself "Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?)
Use Beginning & Ending Sounds (decoding skills)
Blend Sounds & Repeat (MUST repeat the word after sounding it out, before reading ahead...repeating it fluently rather than in sounded out "chunks")
Look at the Pictures (the pictures often provide clues for the vocabulary used in the text)
Look for Sound Chunks (look for known "chunks" rather than individual sounds...such as "ch", "ing", "wh", "ight", "ck", etc.)
Skip the Word, Then Come Back (skipping the word and using the context of the sentence to help figure it out)
Flip the Sound (try short vowel sounds, then try long vowel sounds...which sounds right?)
Fluency Strategies:
Read Again...and Again...and Again (repeated readings of the same text to build smoother fluency)
Expanded Vocabulary:
Tune in to Interesting Words (looking for interesting words...sounds, meaning, exciting)
