Writing: Subway Sandwich Checklist
My Child is Writing About A Subway Sandwich??
The Subway Sandwich Checklist is actually a document that your child helped create based on end-of-year 2nd grade writing expectations. At the beginning of the school year, I used a Subway Sandwich as an analogy to writing. We talked about how exciting it is to go to Subway and build your own sandwich, first choosing your own bread and then adding in all the yummy ingredients.
Then I asked them to try and imagine how disappointed they would be if they discovered....just as they were unwrapping their sandwich to eat....that they ONLY had the bread! BIG GROANS!
I explained that the ingredients added to the middle are what make one sandwich different from all the rest and that personal touch is what makes the sandwich BETTER! STORIES are just like a Subway Sandwich because the middle of a story is like the middle of a Subway Sandwich...without all the ingredients (or details), it's just a boring old sandwich (or story)!
As we've talked about writing this year, I've used this analogy and the kids really GET it. The link below takes you to the checklist. Your child has learned every writing skill on the list and has been writing with these expectations for many months. Ask your child how he/she uses the checklist during writing workshop and encourage your child to use it at home in his/her writing.
